Did you know...........
James F. Stiles Jr.,
Former Chairman of the Board, Vice President, Treasurer and Director of Abbott Laboratories, Chicago. Brother Stiles was born 27 June 1892.
Brother Stiles started as an order picker in the Abbott Laboratories shipping room, where he started in 1913. Dr. Wallace C. Abbott can lay claim to one of the most unique methods of personnel recruitment: delivering babies whom he later employed! Brother Stiles was one of those babies.
Brother Stiles was also President of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce from 1945 to 1947 and a Republican delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1960.
Brother Stiles was raised on 21 May 1919 at wayfarers Lodge #1001 in Evanston, Illinois. He was also Past Sovereign of St. John's Conclave #1, the Red Cross of Constantine in Chicago.
I can not find a date of his death anywhere, but he was a Wayfarer of note and a part of our history.
He was also Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for the United States of America under Eisenhower.
ReplyDeleteI'll get a date of death and post it. His son was als a master mason - James Fuller Stiles III.
-James F. Stiles V
Great info! Thanks Jaymie!
ReplyDeleteThis message is for James F. Stiles V......I'm not sure if you'd be interested but I have a stock cert. from "Jas. F. Stiles Co." It was a clothing busn. in Chicago that was owned by the father of James F. Stiles Jr. The stock was bought by my great-great grandfather who was Dr. Abbott's brother in-law.
ReplyDeleteJames F. Stiles, Jr. was my grandmother's first cousin. My mother has memories of visiting his family in Lake Bluff, IL.
ReplyDeleteIf my assumptions and calculations are correct, James F. Stiles V and I are third cousins once removed. As an amateur genealogist this is of great interest to me, and I would love to communicate with you further.
If the stock certificate is still available, I would be interested in acquiring it, or possibly just an image of it.
Thanks!

ReplyDeleteJaymie: I would love to make contact. Please email me directly, at clay@mcqueens.us. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI am James Fuller Stiles, Jr.'s granddaughter Laurie Stiles Daynes. He passed away on October 26, 1965 in Waukegan, IL. My father Gilbert William Stiles is his son also and was a Mason. Thank you for the wonderful tribute to "Pop" and his Masonic history! They did indeed live in Lake Bluff, IL in a beautiful home built by our grandfather. As mentioned by my cousin, he was Assistant Secretary of the United States Treasury under President Eisenhower and the Director of Savings Bonds. A letter came from President Eisenhower to Pop when he was ill and it was very special for us to share with him. I remember him for his kind and loving heart and the fun we also had all together at his summer home in Wisconsin on Lake Delevan.
ReplyDeleteIf you have a picture, I would love to put it up in our Temple! For the Lodge's 100th anniversary, we are putting together a wall of our History. THANKS! and sorry for the late reply, I didnt notice your comment. My apologies!
